Renji Abarai 阿散井 恋次
Time for some Bleach character bios! I am going to post them alphabetically and will try to cover all of the important characters in the Bleach manga. I am not going to cover the anime, but I will show youtube clips of each character in action so you get a better sense of their personality. So without further ado, let’s start with Abarai Renji, a shinigami vice captain.
Renji is the vice-captain of the 6th squad in the shinigami Gotei 13. His captain is Kuchiki Byakuya, arguably the strongest shinigami captain. We first meet Renji when he and Byakuya travel to the regular world to bring back rogue shinigami Rukia, whom he seems to personally have something against. Rukia is hanging out with Ichigo and knew she would have to return to the Soul Society to face her judgement and punishment. Renji and Rukia grew up together, so it is fitting that he is one of the shinigami sent to bring her in
Renji’s zanpakutou (special swords only used by shinigami) is called Zabimaru (Serpant’s Tail). Similar to Ivy in Soul Caliber, Renji can extend his sword and use it like a whip. Renji’s bankai (an uber special form similar to DBZ Super Saiyan forms….) is called Hihiou Zabimaru (Baboon King Zabimaru). Renji’s zanpakutou grows into a giant snake skeleton that he can also extend and control at his whim. The giant skeleton makes Renji stronger, but he sacrifices speed for strength and power.
Renji is very over confident and impulsive. Even though he has a strategic sword and bankai, he uses it, and his brain, like a blunt instrument. In Renji’s defense, he can out muscle most foes and has tactical experience. He knows exactly what his bankai and sword can do. Yet he fails to use them creatively even though the possibilities are limitless. Since he is only a vice-captain, you can’t expect much, but he is very entertaining to watch. Renji can be funny, rude, kind, and mostly friendly with the other characters. He is one of the best characters to have as an companion and he is always good in a fight. Soul Society Hierarchy
If you are like me, you read Bleach and are puzzled about the Soul Society hierarchy. I have read all of the Bleach manga up until the most recent one and I am still shaky about the rank of captains and all the extra characters like Yoruichi. This hierarchy chart will help you understand the Soul Society much better in the future. As Bleach is destined to continue for quite some time, I think this chart can come in handy when new characters pop out of nowhere to confuse and annoy you.
The Soul Society is similar to feudal Japan. The Gotei 13 captains are the Imperial Guards charged with the main task of protecting the society and upholding the law by any means necessary. Most of the major decisions are carried out by the Gotei 13. The Royalty and Central 46 Chambers comprise the main government. The king and the royal family reside in a separate dimension that can only be opened by a royal key. The Central 46 Chambers serve the shinigami royalty. They are made up of 46 wisemen and judges. They are sealed in an enclave which no one else may enter regardless of their civilian or military status. Their judgments are final and unquestionable regardless of the decision.
The Onmitsukidou is the special forces division. They handle black ops and intelligence. The demon arts corps are the wizards of the Soul Society. Their spells range from attacking, binding, to healing. I don’t know anything about the Royal Special Task Force yet, but they are said to have considerable power and tactical knowledge. The Bleach world is pretty complex, but if you watch the anime or read the manga, you definitely want to know as much as you can.
